Last week we walked about morning rituals as that is the first thing that start the day right. Now you can't forget that what leads to a good morning is to have a good night. There is no specific thing that you “should” or “need” to do, as that answer will change often, but notice what helps you decompress and feel at peace.
Night Routine
Notice how you like to unwind your mind. Notice how you like to unwind your body. Notice how you like to unwind your soul. This may all have the same answer or each aspect (mind, body, and soul) may need something different.
Here is the difference between a healthy night routine and different: the awareness of each part that needs to unwind. More times than not, your body can't “shut down” till your mind does. Or maybe it's the opposite, your mind can’t shut down because of your body. Or maybe it's your soul that needs time to decompress? As we did last week, take a moment to think of what activities you like to do that rests on each aspect of yourself. I’ll give you some examples of what has worked for me:
Mind: doodle, reading/tv
Body: exercise, meditate, yoga, dance
Soul: gratitude, reflection, animal pets
ALL the above: journal, art, animal pets, face/bath routine,
Take a moment to braindump what activities came to your mind or maybe what of mine has resonated with you.
I encourage you to try multiple things, as what you think if may not always work, give yourself the opportunity to change your mind as you evolve your ideas may grow. What you do may not be what your daily, friends, or others do - and THAT’S OKAY! We are all different, which shows we all will need different things. Do not judge yourself during the braindump process, and give yourself compassion if what you originally think would work doesn’t.
This is your short, sweet, and simple way to bottom line your night routine - honor yourself and the fact that your mind, body, and soul will all need time to decompress for rest.
Questions to support you in noticing how your night routine impacts you:
What helps you fall asleep the fastest?
What helps you STAY asleep throughout the night?
What extra support do you need while sleeping?
How can you shift your perspective toward rest?
Where did you feel the most relaxed after you decompressed?
What haven’t you tried yet?
I encourage you to journal, brain dump, or mindmap after each night routine you try. The questions above will support you on reflection to find what truly works for you.
