Positive self-talk or no talk: affirmation and mantras

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

Having the ability to build a strong connection with positive self-talk begins with using the tools available to you. Affirmations and mantras are positive self-talk that we can use to not only support ourselves but also to ground ourselves. This has become more and more “trendy” as mental health is being talked about more and more. Why is it so important, well we all have an inner critic that has a goal of using negative self talk to keep us small as it believes that is what is safe.

Some of the most common or trending affirmations right now are:

  • I am statements: I am beautiful. I am strong. I am whole.

  • I don’t chase, I attract. What belongs to me will simply find me.

  • Today is going to be a good day.

Positive Affirmations use reassuring thoughts to balance the inner critic talk to the point where you feel more love than fear. Practice positive self-talk and identify negative self-talk. Look for positives, meaning to reframe the negative events more positively and look at them as lessons rather than a bad situation.

Use affirmations:

  • Keep the positive self-talk game strong!

  • You are what you believe you are! You got this!

  • Counteract every negative thought with a positive one.

  • Affirmation! Affirmation! Affirmation!

Affirmations make it hard for judgment to make its way through. Judgment will never disappear but you can make it smaller and make love stronger. Your job is to find things that make your conscious mind stronger than your conditioned brain.

Try Mantras:

  • Treat yourself as if you were your own best friend.

  • Question your assumptions and biased thoughts.

  • Is this a lie or the truth?

  • Is there an underlying issue? If so, what is it?

Mantras are similar to affirmations as they are also positive self-talk, but they are also more motivational. You may constantly be hearing a statement repeated to you from your inner judge, but the love in you is stronger. Find the statement that best supports you in your life. They could also be your go-to questions that pull you out of spiraling downward in overthinking.
